Once inside, it’s easy to forget that you’re in the middle of Auckland’s CBD due to the authentic Japanese atmosphere. Surprisingly spacious by city standards, there are tables that fit larger groups – some of which is izakaya style seating – as well as cosy booths for up to four people.

As the name suggests, Kushi have numerous meat-on-stick options on their menu. They also have sushi, sashimi, tempura, salads, teppan and delicious bento boxes, as well as an extensive drinks menu.

Prices are a little on the expensive side ($7 for edamame!), but the food is good quality. There is a lunch special for $14, which is great value for the amount of food you receive. I think this is a great place for people who already enjoy Japanese cuisine as well as novices since there will be something on the menu for everyone. And if you time your visit for a Friday night, you will be treated to a Taiko performance at 7:30pm.
